Upgrading from Windows Vista to Windows 7 can cause your on-board audio drivers to stop working, leaving you with no sound on your PC. If your sound device is high-definition audio (like SoundMAX or AC97′ Realtek) you will usually experience what Windows calls an “Error code 10″.
If you tried downloading the new driver for it and it appears to install correctly, it still might not fix the problem. This is why I always recommend users download and install a commercial driver tool to ensure your computer always has the exact, updated manufacturer drivers for their PC’s.
The error message posted above indicates that you’ve got an incompatible driver or missing audio controller driver.
Is your audio sound card integrated on your motherboard or does your computer have an external audio card (Plug and Play)? To make sure that you download the correct and e most up-to-date version of the audio driver, visit the Motherboard manufacturer’s website or download and use an automated driver finder tool to make sure your using and installing the correct audio driver for your specific PC and Windows version.
You should consider uninstalling the present sound driver from the Windows Device Manager before installing the new one.
1. Open Device Manager. Start button > Control Panel > System and Maintenance > Device Manager. (Windows 7)
2. Locate the audio device and, right click with your mouse and select Properties.
3. Click on the Driver Tab and then click on the Uninstall button to remove the current audio driver associated with your sound device.
Once the old driver has been uninstalled, restart your PC and install the new driver. (if your are not using a software driver tool like the link above.)
This should fix your sound problem and any “Error Code 10″ error messages on Windows 7.
Note: Some people have found that if you are trying to upgrade your device manually, you can try and reboot in safe mode first to remove the old audio BEFORE rebooting in Windows 7 to install the new driver.
