Adjust Windows 7 Aero Peek Desktop Preview Delay Time

in Windows 7

One complaint about the Aero peek desktop option in Windows 7 is the ability to adjust the default animation speed settings. While there is no direct menu setting built-in, there is a way you can modify the speed to your personal preference – whether you prefer to speed up the animation, or slow it down.

To make the adjustments, follow these steps below:

  • Click the Start button and  type in “regedit” (without  the quotes) .
  • Now in the Search bar, right click with your mouse on the regedit.exe found in the list and then click Run as administrator.
  • Next, navigate to the following registry key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced
  • Right click with your mouse on the advanced entry link on the left side panel and choose Export, select Desktop in the Save in box and type in “backup” (without the quotes) where it says File Name.
  • Click on the Save button.
  • Right click on the advanced entry on the left side panel and select New >DWORD and rename DWORD as DesktopLivePreviewHoverTime.
  • Double-click the new DesktopLivePreviewHoverTime and select the Decimal option. Change this value to whatever speed you want (remember, the preview delay time  setting is in milliseconds, so if you want the delay time to be 4 seconds, then set the value to 4000.
  • Restart Windows 7 for the settings to take place.

IMPORTANT: The backup file you saved in step 4 will be on the Desktop called backup.reg. If you ever need to restore the registry changes you made, just double-click on this file to import and reverse the changes.
