While using our computers we expect them to perform many different types of tasks while providing a great level of efficiency. While most PC’s are prepared to meet such challenges, they cannot handle these tasks properly if adequate programs for particular tasks are not installed. Programs are task specific. For instance, MS Office itself is a program which enables you to work on various applications such as MS Word (for word processing), MS Excel (for spreadsheet jobs) and so on. Similarly, there are many other applications and services which are required in order for any software to run. Now, the example mentioned above is one of the most common applications which are installed on PC’s today.
MS Office is a requirement for most computer users and can handle a ton of administrative tasks. However, there are a lot of smaller programs which may not be required on a daily basis. For instance, all computer games are also computer programs that need to be installed before playing, and this is not a regular application on a computer or used for work-related tasks. Once the application finishes its job and is not going to be used any longer (like a computer game that has been finished), it should be uninstalled. This ensures that the hard disk space on your computer is not occupied and you can free up space for new software. The same thing applies to other such programs which are installed on your PC but are not used or used very rarely. It is always better to uninstall or remove those files altogether.
Installing and uninstalling is quite an easy task as most programs or software come with a built in “install” and “remove” option.
- Installation is a very easy process as each software disk comes with a “Setup” or “Install” option. All one needs to do is to double click on the icon and follow the instructions on the screen.
- Uninstalling is however a little more complicated. Most programs have icons and many users make the mistake of thinking that by simply deleting the icon from their desktop or start menu, they have removed the program. However, this is not the correct procedure and the program is not actually removed from the computer. You should uninstall using Windows Control Panel.
a. To uninstall software correctly, left click on the ‘Start’ tab located at bottom left hand corner of the screen, the Start Menu will open up.
b. From that Start Menu, you will have to left click on the “Settings” option which has the control panel under it.
c. After selecting Control Panel, an option for ‘Add and Remove Programs’ can be found. Double click on this option and a window pops up which has a list of programs installed on you PC. Along with that list there is also an option beside each program that shows the amount of hard disk space used by it along with a ‘Remove’ option.
d. Clicking on ‘Remove’ option corresponding to a program will remove the program from your computer permanently. After this is done, you can close the control panel.
Please note: Some programs will not have an option for removing the program through the Add and Remove tool. In that case, that program has to be deleted from you hard drive manually along with the Registry information inserted during the initial install. Your Windows registry is a very complex component and is vital to the Windows operating system. Modifying or deleting registry entries manually can cause irreversible damage.
