Apparently Sony Corporation did learn from it past mistakes. It lost the Beta versus VHS format war, not because its beta product was inferior but because Sony refused to license its technology to other manufacturer’s so they could build hardware for it. The high-definition video war is over and Blu-ray is the undisputed winner.

Now that the war is over, many PC owners want to add Blu-ray capability to their PCs. If you are running Windows 7 or Mac OS/X, you are all ready to add Blu-ray since both of those operating systems support Blu-ray.

First Decision

Even if your operating system supports Blu-ray, your hardware may not. The Blu-ray drive uses SATA to connect to your motherboard. The important thing to check is to see if your graphics card and monitor are HDCP compliant. HDCP stands for High-Bandwidth Digital Content Protection created by Intel to prevent pirating while the content is dent over DVI or HDMI connections between a source and a receiver.

So if either your graphics (the source) or your monitor (the receiver) fails the HDCP test, you will still get a signal but it won’t be high definition and you will have wasted your money.

Second Decision

If your hardware supports Blu-ray, then your second decision is whether to buy a Blu-ray player or a burner. Players are cheaper but only let your play the disks. Burner will give you the ability to create all varieties of Blu-ray, DVD and CD disks including dual layer disks. With 25GB storage on a single layer disk and 50 GB on a dual layer disk, the storage capacity is inviting. At the moment, single layer disks run around $3 each and dual layer disks around $10 each.

Third Decision

You will also need software to run your Blu-ray player or burner. Both Windows 7 and the Mac OS/X have built in software capable of Blu-ray playback. However, for burning or ripping, you will most likely want to purchase a commercial application like Cyberlink’s Power DVD Ultra or Nero.

Recommendation

If your hardware supports Blu-ray but your operating system doesn’t, you really should consider upgrading to Windows 7 or Max OS/X. I did read about some tweaked drivers available for Windows XP, but no one seems to be having much luck getting them to work right.

Ever since man discovered a way to record audio sounds, there has always been the problem of copying one record, tape, cassette, CD or DVD to another one. Some manufactures have even offered dual deck recorders that allowed “dubbing” or making a duplicate of the media in the other drive.

I haven’t seen any dual DVD burners although you can always install two of them in your computer and then copy from one to the other. If you have a lot of DVDs you will need to make a backup copy just in case something happens to the original. I always use the backup copy for normal viewing and keep the originals properly stored in a safe place. So, to back up your DVDs you need a tool that will let you:

Copy the content from the DVD

Make the best possible copy

Preferably only have to buy one tool to do it.

Your DVD burner should have come with burning software. The only way to find out if this software will do the job you want is to test it by making a copy of one of your DVDs then play it back in your DVD player that is hooked up to your television to see what kind of quality you got.

The reality is that you will not find one tool that can do it all. Many claim to do so, but none of them totally succeed, at least not if you want the best quality copies.

One of the primary problems with making good backup copies is that commercially recorded DVDs are usually on dual layer media. Most burners are for single layer media only so you will either have to use two DVDs, only copy part of the material on the DVD or use a compression algorithm to fit everything on one DVD. Compression will reduce the video and audio quality.

The first thing you need to do is decide what content on the DVD you want to backup. You want the movie obviously, but do you really need multiple language versions, subtitles, trailers, cast interviews or both the 4:3 and widescreen versions? Probably not…

Another issue is transcoding which is a method of reducing the size of an MPEG video file without needing to re-encode the entire movie. This is done by eliminating data you can’t see or hear on the screen. There are many applications available. Some of the better ones for reducing the file size are DVD2ONE, Nero’s Recode, DVD Shrink and Pinnacle Instant Copy DVD.

No matter which applications you use the first step is to rip the DVD and remove unwanted stuff then select what you want to keep. You will most likely want to select these options:

Select the English version of the picture and sub picture

If your sound system supports the DTS format, then only backup the DTS sound track. It provides the best audio. Leave the smaller AC-3-2 soundtracks because they are the ones normally used with the menus.

If you don’t have support for the DTS sound track then select all the English and unspecified AC3 tracks.

Select NO COMPRESSION to maintain quality (we will compress it when we transcode.)

Next save your selections. Depending on the program used, you may be able to save it directly to the hard drive or you may need to go through other menus. You want to save it to your hard drive with a different name than the one you created directly from the DVD. The program will decrypt the movie and save it to your hard drive. It can take quite a while, so be patient.

Next you may need additional software such as DVDRemake that allows you to remove foreign language menus, trailers, movie previews and other unwanted content if your program doesn’t have that feature. Save your project to the hard drive again with a different name.

Next use software to edit the menus so you can remove the buttons and links to the features you removed in previous steps. Then save your project, again with a different name.

If you have trimmed the file size to less than 4.3 GB, you can now safely burn your backup to a DVD. If not you will need to transcode the file and then burn it to the DVD. As always, after the transcoding is finished, save the file with a different name. Using different names at each step of the process will help make the process shorter if you are not satisfied with the quality of your copy or if you decide to change something and need to redo it.

When finished, take the backup copy and test it in your DVD player to make sure it works properly. If it does, store the original in a safe place. If not, use the copy of the original you saved to your hard drive to try again until you get a good backup. The first time you may need to do this a couple of times until you learn how to use your software. After that, it will be a no-brainer to back up the rest of your DVDs.

A descendant of Roxio’s Easy CD Creator, Easy Media Creator 10 by Roxio offers a CD copying option but only allows you to copy non-protected CDs and DVDs. The program has numerous other capabilities. The suite seems designed to put all the tools you need to manage your digital life into one software application. Basically, Roxio took all of their individual media creation, format conversion, and disk burning applications and bundled them into Easy Media Creator 10. It is a general disk authoring tool whose programming code has been rewritten to be windows vista compatible and well as still fully supporting windows XP.

Features

Disk Copying – This program allows the user to easily copy data, audio, photo and video CDs and DVDs including Blu-ray and HD-DVD disks. It has the capability of spanning multiple disks so you can copy movies without needing to use compression and lower the video and audio quality. While the quality of the copy is excellent, the program only allows copying unprotected disks.

Video Compression – the software allows video compression to permit copying the DVD-9 format onto a DVD-5 blank disk.

Catalogs – Easy Media Creator 10 automatically catalogs and tracks disk content even after removal from the drive.

Scheduling Backups – the software allows the user to schedule unattended backups of your system and can encrypt the data and/or password protect the backup disk.

Audio – the software includes an audio editor that allows you to edit and record audio tracks, add multiple sound layers, apply filters and effects includes support for VST effects. The program can convert audio files into other formats and lets you add professionally designed menu templates to your DVDs. In fact the program automatically converts audio files to Dolby Digital format before burning them to a disk.

Easy Audio Capture lets you configure a predefined volume level and file format for any audio input, such as a webcam microphone or the auxiliary input from a sound card. It can also split out the audio from a video file. Probably the most controversial use of this feature is to capture streaming music from internet radio stations.

Video - the video editor allows the user to perform up to 32 overlays with audio and text tracks to your project using the VideoWave timeline which can allow even a relative novice to create complex, professional quality CD and DVD disks. It includes technology called Smart Sound to enable the user to add a soundtrack to a movie or slideshow that will perfectly sync up with your project to match the flow of the slides or mood of the video scenes.

CineMagic is a feature that is geared toward novices who want to create a professional quality production with fancy graphics and transitions by loading a sequence of video clips. After the user is finished loading the clips, CineMagic will automatically generate the production.

Mobile Devices – Easy Media Center 10 has a built in cell phone doctor that optimizes photos for display on a cell phone screen using a feature called Mobile Photo fit. There is an additional feature that allows auto synchronization to permit transferring music, photos and video from PC to mobile phone and back. The user can configure specific file formats for each mobile device. The media manager will automatically transcode incompatible formats to the specified formats.

YouTube – the software allows you to upload your video to YouTube with a single click of the mouse while in the media manager. All you have to do is provide user id and password.

iPod – the software allow you to copy audio, ringtones, movies and TV shows from and iPod.

User Interface

Installation - the program is easy to install and requires little configuration to use the basic features.

Navigation - The main screen for creating a music CD is shown below. As you can see the buttons are pretty self explanatory and should be easy for most users to understand.

Embedded Help File – Some topics in the embedded help files such as the Roxio LP and Tape Assistant have step-by-step instructions that make it easy to perform a complex task. Other topics like Roxio Media Import rely on a Windows help file that assumes the user understands all of the technical terms.

Conclusion

There is no built-in playback for Blu-ray orHD-DVD, no conversion of HD video files into the DVD compatible AVCHD format. While you can burn and retrieve data backups with Blu-ray and HD DVD disks, you can’t create disks that are compatible with standalone Blu-ray and HD-DVD players.

The biggest downside is the inability to burn copy protected DVDs. Many of today’s movies are CSS-encrypted and Sony ARCCOS protected. As a consumer, I want to be able to make backup copies of all the movies I purchase, not just the ones the manufacturer didn’t copy protect.

While the program has many nice features and should appeal to the avid YouTube and mobile phone crowd, there are enough negatives that, in my opinion, makes its approximately $100 cost unappealing.

DVD Cloner is software program that lets you make backup copies of your movies, music and purchased software from your original DVDs so you can protect that original from damage, loss or theft. The DVD Cloner 5 program won a gold award from the TopTenREVIEWS website as being one of the best DVD copying software packages available today. Below is a screen capture of the program.

DVD Cloner Features

This program comes with just about any feature that I would want in a DVD copying program. The following features are available in DVD Cloner 5.

Supported Formats – DVD Cloner 5 makes exact 1:1 copies of DVD-5 disks and allows the user to copy their DVD movies to both ISO and NRG files on a blank DVD or directly to your hard. The program can also copy CSS-encryption without needing to download a helper plug-in. The state of the art decryption engine can also copy region-protected, Sony ARCCOS protected and Disney movies.

The program supports dual-layer burning so compression is unnecessary if you have a compatible dual-layer burner. If not, you can compress DVD-9 to a single DVD-5 disk, use the movie only feature to minimize compression, or split the movie to two DVD-5 disks. While the quality of the compressed movie is very good, using two disks prevents any loss of movie quality.

Format Selection – The product includes technology that automatically scans the original disk format and provides the correct copying mode and options to the user.

Format Conversion – DVD Cloner 5 can convert your DVDs to multiple formats such as AVI, MPEG and SVCD. These are bonus features and must be downloaded from http://www.dvd-to-divx.com . As long as your copy of DVD-Cloner 5 is registered, all you need to do is install the downloaded bonus software after you have installed and registered the program.

Multiple Copies – DVD Cloner 5 has the ability to select the number of burned copies you want to make so you don’t have to go through the entire copying process again to make a second copy. All you need do is select the number of copies you want to burn and then the program will prompt you when it is ready for a new blank DVD.

HD-DVD and Blu-ray – With the use of a free downloadable helper plug-in available at (http://www.copyhddvd.net), you can rip HD-DVD and Blu-ray movies and then copy directly to your hard drive. However, you can only use this feature if you have an HD or Blu-ray player installed.

Supported Burners – DVD Cloner 5 supports most PAL, NTSC and DVD+-R/RW drives and is compatible with most stand alone DVD players.

Audio and Video Quality – the program has excellent audio and video synchronization, picture and sound quality. If you use the 1:1 copying option, the software creates and exact duplicate of the original disk with the exact same quality.

DVD Recovery – Probably the best feature of this software program is the ability to recover damaged data from scratches or bad sectors on a DVD and restore the lost data to your burned copy. The best part is that this feature is integrated into the full copy selection.

Language Compatibility – DVD Cloner 5 supports several different language including English, Korean, Simplified and Traditional Chinese, Greek, Hungarian and many more.

DVD Cloner Usability

Installation - The program is easy to install and doesn’t require downloading anything to use the standard features. However, to use the format conversion or HD-DVD and Blu-ray capabilities, additional software downloads are required. The downloading process should be easy for anyone who has ever downloaded and installed software from a website.

User Interface – Even the most technically challenged should have no problem using this software. There are two user modes: an Express Mode and an Expert Mode. In express mode, copying a DVD is pretty much of a one click operation. Even in the expert mode, there are software guides to walk you through the customization process so you can produce professional grade copies. The expert mode allows you to select which chapters, language, audio tracks and other features to use for your project.

Embedded Help File – There is a good help section but this product is so easy to use, most people will never need it.

Summary

With the inclusion of the automatic format discovery program, CSS decryptor capability and the bonus conversion software, DVD Cloner overshadows it competitors.

Supported File Formats

Windows media player supports most, but not all, of the common video file formats currently in use. The following file formats are supported by windows media player 9 and higher:

Windows media formats – .asf, .asx, .avi, .wav. .wax, .wma, .wm, .wmz, .wms

Audio Visual Interleave – .avi

MPEG except MPEG-2 – .m3u, .mp2v, .mpg, .mpeg, .m1v, .mp2, .mp3, .m3u, .mpa, .mpe, .mpv2

DVD video (VP and Vista) – .vob (requires 3rd party software or hardware decoders)

MIDI – .mid, .midi, .rmi

Apple Macintosh formats – .aif, .aifc, ,aiff

Sun and NeXT formats – .au, .snd

Intel Video – .ivf (requires video 5.x or higher codec)

Quick Time formats – .avi, .mov, .qt

Flash – .swf (requires flash plug-in)

Codecs for other unsupported file formats are available from the creators of the format such as DivX.

Create Auto Playlists for TV shows

One of the nicer features of windows media player is that you can include Video files in the Microsoft Recorded TV shows (DVR-MS files) category in your video library using one the following filters:

Limit Number of Items

Limit Total Duration to

Limit Total Size to

You need to remove these filters from the criteria that modify the TV shows in my library clause. Then add them back as restrictions to the auto play list using the following steps.

Open Windows Media Player and click Library.

Expand Auto Playlists in the Contents pane. Right-click the auto play list for your TV shows and then click Edit.

Click on each Limit filter displayed under TV shows in my library and then click Remove.

In the And apply the following restrictions to the auto playlist category, click on the plus (+) button, and then click each of the Limit filters to add it.

Repeat to add the remaining filters.

Synchronization Problems

Many times you will experience synchronization problems when you try to import video files into windows media player. When that happens you will receive one of the following error messages when you try to synchronize the file with windows media player:

The remote procedure call failed

Memory could not be allocated because no size has been set

The server threw an exception

You can use the following tips to fix window media player video problems

MPEG-2 video or DVR-MS TV show

Windows media player can automatically convert your MPEG-2 or DVR-MS files to a format supported by your device before synchronizing the files. You will need a supported MPEG-2 decoder installed on your computer.

AVI video files

If you are trying to synchronize AVI video files and get an error message contact the manufacturer of your AVI decoder software for information about an upgrade for your AVI decoder that supports conversion in latest version of Windows Media Player.
If you run into any of these problems trying to synchronize either MPEG-2 or DVR-MS files, do the following:

Install the most recent version of one of the following supported DVD decoders on your computer such as Cyberlink PowerDVD, Intervideo WinDVD, NVIDIA NVDVD Decoder or Sonic CinePlayer DVD Decoder Pack for Windows XP

Remove the copies of the converted files by selecting Tools -> Options. Select the Devices tab and click the Advanced button. Then select Delete Files. You can also open the device in My Computer and delete the files

Next, reset the synchronization logic in the Player and synchronize the files to your device again.

Installing Video CODECs

Usually it is not necessary to install video Codecs if you are running media player 10 or later. If it is necessary, most video Codecs such as DivX come with an install program that will automatically install the codec into windows. If it does not work after the install, you should reinstall the default Codecs using the steps below, reinstall the new codec and reboot the machine to see if the new codec is working.

Open the Control Panel. Select the Add Hardware, select Next then select Yes I have already connected the hardware and click Next.

Select Video Codecs from Manufacturer and Video Codecs from Model and then follow the instructions

Windows media player is a digital media player that was developed by Microsoft. It is used for playing video, audio and for viewing images on personal computers that run on Microsoft Windows operating systems, specifically XP and Vista. It is not only used on personal computers but can also be used on pocket PC and Windows mobile based devices.

Windows media player is generally considered to be the most common media player available today. This is it is pre-installed on most versions of the Windows operating system and is capable of playing practically all video formats. However, there are a few known issues with specific audio and video codecs that might not be installed and will produce errors and missing codec messages. If you have media player installed on your system and are receiving codec errors, you can always upgrade to the latest version of Windows media player from Microsoft. Windows media player is not only a digital player, but can also be used to rip music from compact discs (CD’s) and in the process, allows you to copy and backup your music MP3/WMA/CDA to blank compact discs. It is also used for building audio CDs in recordable discs and for the synchronizing of content with digital audio players and other mobile devices. Windows media player has replaced the other older software media player, by adding more features other than simple video and audio playback.

There are many video formats that are supported by Windows media player like the advanced system formats (ASF). These formats are video formats that are encoded using non-Microsoft codec. A codec is basically software that is used for decompressing files before playing the file. It is important that the right codec be installed on your PC or windows media player will not be able to play the file.

There are some ASF files that require plug-ins to play correctly. These plug-ins are components that add functionality to Windows media player; but it is not possible to install plug-ins in earlier versions. ASF plug-ins will only work on newer versions.

Another video format that Windows media player supports is video that is encoded with the help of windows Media Video codec. However, there are some media players that were used before the introduction of the Windows media player 9 series that required updated codec’s to play some WMV files. Here again, some WMV files may require plug-ins for correct playback.

Audio video interleaved is another media player video format that is supported by Windows media player. This is a video format where video is encoded in a highly compressed format. A non-Microsoft codec is used for compressing content where the appropriate codec has to be used on the PC to play the file.

Media center recorded television is also a video format that is supported by Windows media player. In this video format, video data is encoded which makes it possible to store TV content that was recorded using windows XP Media Center Edition. However to use this media player, you need Windows XP and a Windows XP compatible DVD decoder.

Although we have covered a basic outline, Microsoft continues to release new, updated versions so always upgrade to the latest version if you run into any problems during playback or CD ripping.

DVD Burning Basics

DVD burning is an excellent way to preserve your digital camcorder movies, record your favorite television shows and collect a library of your favorite movies. It is absolutely necessary to make backup copies of the movies you have purchased so you don’t have to replace them if they get damaged or lost. As long as you are not breaking the copyright laws for commercially created entertainment films, you can also share your burned DVDs with family and friends.

You will need a DVD drive that can burn blank DVD discs installed on your computer; software to actually burn the DVD, a program to import movies from cameras or VCRs, and blank discs that are compatible with you DVD burner. At the moment, Windows Vista is the only operating system that contains built-in support for burning DVDs. However, most of the commercial DVD burning applications have features that built-in and free applications just don’t have.

DVD Burners and Drivers

The most import thing about your DVD burner is that it be able to support a format that can be read by most DVD players and that you can get drivers for your computer’s operating system. If you are running Windows XP, you must Windows XP-compatible drivers. For Vista, you need Vista drivers, etc. If the drivers are not compatible, the burner will either not work at all or will not work properly.

Transferring Video to Your PC

If your camcorder can link directly to your computer by USB, firewire or ilink, fine. If not, you can buy a DV bridge that will allow you to hook up an analog camcorder and VCR’s audio and video outputs to your computer.

Most DVD burners come with free software that will let you import the movie and save it as a file that can later be used to burn your DVD.

Burning Software

You will need DVD burning software and blank DVD discs to finish your project. Keep in mind that the process of encoding a movie into a DVD-compatible format can take a while. A 60 minute home video, can take several hours to encode. Most burners need about 15-20 minutes per hour of video for the actual burning process. After you’ve created a DVD, you can immediately burn additional copies for friends and family without having to encode it each time.

Most DVD packages provide capabilities such as the ability to include menus. .Although there are several brands of DVD burning software to choose from, my favorite is 1 Click DVD Copy.

1Click DVD Copy

According the publisher, LG Software Innovations, here are the key features of 1 Click DVD Copy:

Windows Vista Compatible

Uses CPRx technology for copying new DVD movies.

Has an integrated burn engine.

Makes a high quality copy of just the movie or you can include all the extras.

Copies Episodic DVD Movies, TV Series, etc.

Copy a DVD movie on one disc using compression.

Copy a movie directly to your hard drive.

Supports burning Dual Layer media.

Supports both NTSC and PAL DVD movies.

No warning messages or anti-piracy tracking codes added to your copy.

Supports both NTSC and PAL DVD movies

Bundled with CopyToDVD which allows you to copy data, DVD video, MP3, Ogg Vorbis and WMA files to DVD

Feature Set – 1 Click DVD Copy from LG Software has everything you need for disc backup. It has a simple, intuitive interface and good instructions. The CopyToDVD bundled software is a nice bonus and you can use dual layer DVD burners without sacrificing quality on dual layer movies.

Ease of Use – it really only takes 1 click to make the backup copies of your movies. Of course, you have to select which options you want to use such as copy to hard drive or to the DVD burner.

Quality - the quality was extremely high for both compressed movies and straight copying.

Speed – the copies were made much faster than with my other DVD burning software.

Usefulness – This product is very useful if you have a habit of scratching or not properly storing you DVD’s. I managed to melt one on the front seat of my car on a very hot summer day.

Help & Support – they have a good online knowledgebase is extremely useful.

Conclusion

All in all, 1 Click DVD Copy from LG Software is a good solution for you disc backup needs. Ease of use, quality of the backup and the $59 price tag makes this product a must have.

DVD copying software performs numerous functions like DVD/CD copying, converting and burning of all types of media (music, video, data, pictures, etc.), and mirror imaging. There are many types of DVD copy software programs available on the market today like DVDFab, 1 click DVD copy and PowerDVD. These software apps can work on different formats including those used by online video sharing sites and formats compatible with portable devices like iPods and PSP’s.The main functions of DVD software are copying, converting and burning of data. They can be used for ripping DVD games, photo disks, data DVDs and home movies. With so many competing products available today, there are a few things you have to look out for when deciding on which one to purchase.

Look for the features available on DVD copy software like decoding of CSS decryption, restoring of defective DVDs, support of multiple disc formats and compression of large video files. DVD copy software should be easy to use, easy to install and set up, should produce DVD copies (or exact mirrors) without any quality loss and work without any errors or conflicts with other programs. Also make sure your PC’s DVD player model is on the applications “compatibility” list of burners.

One of the best DVD copy software programs available today is 1click DVD copy where only one click of the mouse is sufficient for copying multiple DVD movies. It’s Windows Vista compatible and has an integrated burning engine, and can be used for copying movies on your hard drive. 1click DVD copy supports dual layer media and both NTSC and PAL DVD movies. It also offers free technical support and free software updates for a full year.

Another popular DVD copy software is DVDFab. It’s possible to copy any DVD to DVDR, DVDRW, or CDs in just a few steps. This developer of DVDFab software has been developing DVD copying software for over 7 year and has over 7 DVD to DVD copy modes available. Its full disc feature makes it possible to copy movies, menus and trailers to a DVD with a single click.

DVDFab helps copy the movie with specific audio compressions, personalizes your DVD where you can cut commercials and select your own titles and menus and is really great for merging several sources onto one DVD. DVDFab also helps in DVD to mobile copying in devices like iPods, Xbox, PVP and Cell Phones. DVDFab also removes all DVD copy protection, (for legitimate backups of your purchased software only) to protect your discs in case of damage (scratches, lost discs, etc.) and is constantly updated to support recent mobile devices and the latest DVD burners. DVDFab comes with a free lifetime upgrade and offers free worldwide lifetime support through email.

Last, but definitely not least, is PowerDVD. This is great DVD software that features the functions you expect in DVD software. PowerDVD can be used for viewing VideoCDs and multi-channel Super VideoCDs. This makes it an excellent tool for testing of VideoCDs. The features of PowerDVD include Dolby digital recorder, DTS digital surround decoder, virtual speaker settings, customizable toolbar navigator and adjustable color cast controls.

PowerDVD is compatible with all DVD/CD Media and Drives, has digital zoom, enhanced on screen display options, MP3, CD, VCD and SVCD playback and many more features.

We covered some of the top DVD software currently available, but be sure to research each one yourself, especially double checking for compatibility for your DVD model.
